I believe there are levels of aggression in dogs. Some are slightly aggressive and can be trained. On the otherhand, there are dogs with severe aggression that should be put down. Every aggressive dog should be evaluated on how aggressive it is and whether you can work with it or not. Some people and even shelters don't give dogs with aggression a chance no matter how slight the aggression is.
My cocker was very food aggressive when I got her and would attack anything that came near her food. But with training she is no longer food aggressive and you can do whatever you want with her food and she won't have a care in the world about it. If she were at a shelter, she probably would have been put down.
I just think that every dog, even aggressive dogs deserve a chance, if the problem can not be corrected and you have worked really hard with the the dog then I feel the only thing to do is to put the dog down. After all, the dog would be considered dangerous and the best thing to do would be to put it down.
It is sad that these dogs have to endure this, alot of them end up aggressive because of their owners, it is not fair to the dog, but what are you going to do. What also bothers me is that if a dog bites someone one time they are considered highly aggressive. Rather than trying to figure out why the dog bit him and trying to help the dog, it is considered aggressive and muzzled or put down when in all reality it could have been the person who got bit who was the one at fault. I don't like getting bit by a dog anymore than getting bit by a snake but rather than wanting the dog destroyed I would try to figure out what went wrong and whether it can be helped. Not all dogs that are aggressive can be helped, but I would want to try my best to give it the chance. Bottom line is we just need to try to understand these dogs more and try our best to help them.
