I found this for you..

Q: My neighbor adopted a Katrina dog, which is very nice. But the dog was heartworm positive. Should I worry about my own dog's health? -- L.C., Grand Rapids, MI

A: Not as long as you give your dog a heartworm preventative. Heartworm isn't contagious from pet to pet. "If your dog is on a preventative, heartworm disease will not occur; it's as simple as that," says Dr. Jorge Guerrero, an adjunct professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and chair of the American Heartworm Society Scientific Committee.
