Default carseat is the way to go!

For a very small investment, I got this Outward Hound carseat and it's perfect for Topher. He loves it now and it's up high enough that he can see everything that's going on outside. It's big enough that he can curl up and have a nap, too. He wears his harness and his harness attaches onto a strap inside the seat, so he's safely tethered.

Topher rode in the kennel for quite some time until I got concerned that he would bounce around inside the thing if ever we were in an accident. Plus it wasn't easy to get him in and out of it if we stopped for a piddle.

I've been in enough fender benders in my life to know that it doesn't take much of an impact for a little dog to go flying in a vehicle. It's worth it to spend the few dollars to keep him safe.
