I think there's a difference between a dog that is carried in a carrier and one that is walking. A dog in a carrier can't hurt anything, or make a mess on the floor, so I don't think it's a big deal. I've never had any problems bringing my dog into a store, and if I were asked to leave, I would. I've never been asked to leave yet. A lot of stores don't mind, and half the time, the employees are the first ones to ooh and ah over my baby. Part of the reason I got a small dog was so I could take her places with me. I wouldn't try to sneak her into a grocery store, but I don't see the big deal in taking her to stores that don't have food or "no dogs allowed" signs.
