I was in an accident years ago where I rolled my car about 4 or 5 times. Sure enough that seatbelt saved me from serious injury! It became a law here in Texas right about the time I got my license. I sure fought it though! I would cruise through town with my seat belt "ready" just in case I saw my parents or a cop! But then I started commuting out of town to work and just felt so much more comfortable knowing I was buckled in. That accident happened just a few months later. It's gotten to be such a strong habit that I will get in the car and put my seatbelt on just to drive across the parking lot to another store.
And no, helmets for a motorcycle rider are not a law here anymore but I remember when it was. I still make my husband wear one (although all he would consent to was a little beanie helmet) and it probably saved him from serious head injury when a truck pulled in front of him while he was riding his Harley and he went flying across the highway. I do have a serious issue with no helmets. It's not always the motorcyle driver making a mistake.... there are crazy drivers out there and the one on the motorcycle is almost always going to get hurt or killed when the two collide!
