Pin brushes with balls on the tips pull out hair. The little ball catches on the knots. I love the Chris Chrisiansen pin brushes. The pins are polished on the ends (no balls) and don't scratch skin like cheaper pin brushes that you can get at the big petsomethings.
As far as shampoo goes, everyone seems to have different opinions. Whatever you choose to use, dilute it with water and rinse well.
