An 81-year-old Waterloo woman was knocked down and her dog killed when a neighbor's dogs burrowed under a chain link fence and attacked Saturday.
Bernice Wasserfort was holding her Yorkshire terrier and walking through her back yard when two Staffordshire Terriers forced their way under her chain link fence at about 7 a.m.
When the dogs got out from under the fence, one of them knocked over Wasserfort and attacked the Yorkie, killing it instantly, relatives said.
Wasserfort's son and daughter-in-law tried to fight off the dogs and rescue the Yorkie, but were unsuccessful.
Animal Control officers issued a citation to the owner of the Staffordshire Terriers, Monique Wolf, though she was allowed to keep her dogs.
Wasserfort said this was the second time she has been knocked down by Wolf's dogs. The first was in the fall when they also tried to get the Yorkie.
Wolf said she was sorry for Wasserfort's loss said her dogs apparently thought the smaller dog was a toy. She said she's had dogs for seven years and they've never attacked a human.
