Per my old (before I moved and haven't found anyone else) exterminator, I used Ortho Home Defense last year. Kept the pets off the area until dried and they were perfectly fine. All I sprayed was the baseboards at the floor and alond door entrances. I also had one spot they loved coming into, so I sprayed that as well. Outside, I sprayed all the entrances and around the windows. No problem at all, all season long and still this year I have seen no ants. I am in an area where they are prominent year round, so I highly recommend this stuff.

As far as natural products, boric acid works, but would not control out over-population. They walk through it and it causes tiny lacerations and they dry up and die. Works for fleas as well. You can get it at Home Depot...saw some today!! Good luck. I know what a nuisance they can be...
