her being the neighbors dog soesn't sound very realisitc to me. The ad in the paper- if you were going to do that they had to put thier real phone number and the nighbors could have seen the ad and the number and known what happened.
I still believe the owners died and maybe the family wasn't really close. it seems to explain it all.
