I know there's a lot or prejudice in the world but there are very few "enlightened" and intelligent people who would consider a mutt or mixed breed dog to be any less because he/she is not "purebred". Although all of my dogs are purebreds it is only because I was always looking for a specific breed. It is not that I ever planned to show my dogs in conformation shows or breed them. I have shown in obedience in the past and would love to get into agility.
I think the purebred status is definitely overrated and can be used to discriminate and suggest "quality" but, as with people, dogs are sometimes better (not used to be offensive) when they are a mix of certain genes. There are people who believe that some purebreds have led to temperament problems in certain breeds.
So, bottomline...do not feel uncomfortable about the fact that you own a "mutt". Mutt is a great four letter word on this forum!! |
