I may just be really weird. But, if I had to leave a little dog (any dog) in a crate for 10 hours a day - I wouldn't have a dog.
I work - and my dog is confined to a large kitchen/laundry room area when I'm gone. He has everything he needs - toys, water, food, a bed (forget the potty pad - he tears these up in 10 minutes).... and at 9 months, he almost never goes to the bathroom when I'm gone anymore. (And, if he did - it would be on vinyl and not the end of the world.) I take him out ever two hours when I home - evenings, weekends, days off, etc. And he also wears a belly band at times when he has free run of the house. He sleeps with me and rarely has ever had an accident during the night.
I think crate training is fine. A lot of people have use this very successfully when their dogs were pups. And, I think a dog being confined to a crate occasionally is okay (an hour or two for a special reason). And, with the door open, many dogs like to spend time in their crate and sleep in it.
But - 10 hours a day - I couldn't do this. It seems so "unhealthy" to me. Imagine a person or a child having to live this way!! I would even think this would affect bone structure and development.
I even feel sorry for my birds that are in a cage so much of the time - but at least they have a large cage and can fly around and play all day.
Is this just me?????
