I don't think they really lose it... It just grows out. Pixie has about three inches of silky adult hair and about an inch and a half of nappy puppy hair on the ends. Next time I take her to the groomer (she's only gone once, bad experience) I'm going to have them cut off the puppy hair. It tends to get more tangled than the silky stuff does....
I don't know if you can tell a difference between adult & puppy hair in dogs with a cottony coat though. I would think the texture would be about the same.... I could be wrong though. All the Yorkies I've had contact with were silky! The folks that have cottony pups would be able to tell you if there's a difference or not.
