sometimes offering an alternative works--if they have something you want ,offer a toy they like to play with, a kibble of treat for dropping it etc. Don't get into a tug of war.
A loud growl--Nah! for biting usually works with young pups. How old is the dog? Hitting will just make him afraid of you.
