Do you own this property or are you renting. With a duplex, I'm guessing you are renting. If so you would need permission to cut or move the trees. So I agree with susansmom. Just jog a piece of fence out around the openings

Lowes has green vinyl coated wire that we built a fence around our patio with. It's $32 for a 50 foot roll of 36 in high wire. You could do it in an afternnon.

It would not be unattractive and it would resolve the issue peacefully.
