Yes, all dogs have the capability, but I think there is a big difference between a bite and an attack. Most dogs who bite....bite their victim and stop. An attack is multiple biting over and over. Obviously the larger the dog....the worse the outcome of a bite may be...just because of the size or location of the wound, but they do not continue to bite you after that first chomp.
Children get bitten in the face because they are either at the dog's eye level or bend down to the dog's face.
I also believe some breeds are more prone to biting behavior and are not kid friendly. And if I listed them...I'd get...oh, molly was a _______ and she was wonderful, and I understand, however I would not chose one of the breeds I have in mind as a family pet.
It does seem to me that if a pit bull "snaps"....it does, indeed, go into attack mode. Kill or be killed. The attacks I read about are not a pit bull bit someone....it's a pit bull attacked (and killed), attacked and had to be shot, or punched or whatever to get them to stop. They do not retreat.
Want an example of an attack? My girlfriend owned a yorkie. Her backyard backed up to another neighbor's yard...who had...loving, family pit bulls. The two pits came over the fence to get to her yorkie. They did not stop when the baby was dead...they literally tore her apart into pieces. She watched the entire thing from her window and it was over before she could've done anything in a matter of minutes. She did not press any type of charges nor report the incident. She is far more forgiving than I would've been. The pit owners offered to pay for another yorkie....at the time they were selling here for about 700 bucks. They never did.
You can research and find which breeds have the most reported BITING incidents....the difference is the dog doing the biting STOPPED after that bite It was not necessary for someone to physically stop the dog.
PS Got chomped in the face by a chilhuahua as a child. I do not like chilhuahuas, but I don't cross the street if I see a stray one running around.
