She's crate trained. That's a good idea. My mom and dad even have an over sized crate that they're not using. We usually put her in the bedroom when we're not going to be home. We put her crate (door open) in there, too. She can see out the sliding glass door if she wants to or play with her toys. But we think she spends most of her time sleeping on our bed which we cover with an old blanket when we're gone. She sleeps there at night anyway, so she thinks that's her home. But she likes having a crate. She goes there when she wants to be alone or when she gets hot at night or when something bothers her. I guess everyone needs their own special place. But I think you're right about it becoming especially important when we get a larger dog.
