Please don't think that hernias don't hurt ---- there are many different types of hernias, and some are much worse than others. Also, picking up a little dog might hurt it - whereas the little guy might be much more comfortable walking around or lying down.
I would keep in touch with my vet and get it taken care of as soon as possible. I don't think this is a reason to visit another vet... Visit the vet you are seeing and go over your additional concerns with him.
