So sorry to hear about this.
When you go to court, bring all the paperwork you have on the furbaby. You have placed others for her at no charge, so if she thinks she's going to get away with saying there was a verbal agreement, it's not going to work.
As long as you are sure you had no agreement, I wouldn't worry.
I'm sure the Judge didn't go to school just to eat his/her lunch.
