I've heard that dogs can and have bred through a fence (my vet confirmed that this can happen) so I beleive it. I wouldn't just rely on a crate. I would crate but put in seperate rooms behind a closed door.
This is the very reason I used a stud on my girls instead of owning my own. I didn't want to have to pen anyone up. But i've decided that I want to own my own stud so I'm going to have to do the same.
