I totally agree. I remember way back in 2014 when I stumbled across a crazy thing on his site. A clock ticking and his deep voice going on and on about his "special list" and how I could get a great deal. I think it was like 30 minutes. Of course I never signed up...but went back out of curiosity...the clock started over again. (of course) Typical carnival barker type thing. I found the post from back then..... he now offers the list free of charge. I assume he found another way to make money as you have suggested. Everyone thinks he has done this out of the goodness of his heart....some story about how his dog died and he wants to help others. Whatever.
Here is the link. the clock went away long ago....I suspect others said things about it...and he removed it out of bad press. It was a really scammy page.
