So last night I decided I'd let the puppy go on the floor near the cat. Well what a huge mistake that was at first the cat was hissing at her then when she kept going up to him he started grawling and swatted at her. I cut his nails yesterday morning so luckly they weren't sharp and the puppy didn't get hurt, just very scared. Does anyone have any advise on how to at least get my cat to tolerate the puppy without hurting her. Now I am so nervous about them being near each other. |
I think the best way we handled it was to allow the pet who was there first have control until they get used to each other and their smells. We have a small crate for Chloe aside from her playpen. When the cat was getting used to her, we placed her inside her crate in the middle of the floor. Mango did circles around her crate, smelling, hissing, the whole thing for a few weeks, now they play like crazy. When I could sit right in the same room, I put her in her playpen so I could watch closely. Mango (the cat) liked her in the crate much better then the playpen during this time because Mango was able to get to all sides of her while checking her out, and deciding whether we should keep Chloe around or not

Now Mango jumps into the playpen when she wants to be near Chloe. They actually love each other now, well, Chloe really loves her for her tail! She loves to ponce for it and I truly believe the cat swishes it in slow motion, just to make Chloe pounce at it. It's the best yorkie toy in the house
