My late 3lb. little Jilly was attacked by a 65 lb. Dalmatian and had to endure painful surgery to close several bites, She even seized in my arms as I was carrying her to the car, 2 blocks away.
I began to use an auto-opening big, black umbrella that I would suddenly whoosh open before the dog's eyes as soon as I noticed a dog fixated on us from afar. Whatever the size, whatever the breed, that always did the job of discouraging further aggressive interest. Every single dog backed off coming near us from the moment that big umbrella so unexpectedly unfolded as our outline had suddenly mysteriously enlarged and morphed and remained in place.
Of course, a surprise attack from out of eye range or from around the corner can still happen but at least you have a ready weapon in your hand to help fight the aggressive dog,
