It's usually wisest to abide by any medical/veterinary clinic's rules (usually made for a good reason based on past experiences) but in this case, the wait to hear about your little Yorkie was unconscionably long. You might want to be sure they understand that
will never happen again. And 12 lbs. still is a very small dog but even at 112 lbs. you always have reason to check on your baby's welfare after undergoing general anesthesia and not knowing the outcome for hours. No doubt they were truly busy taking care of their patients until the evening hours but they must consider that their patients all have caring, concerned, often worried parents, waiting to exhale until they hear their baby is okay.
