Default Yorkie Grieving?

My mother-in-law passed away two days before Christmas. For reasons unrelated to this post, the wake and Celebration of Life weren't held until a few weeks ago. Fabian seems unusually anxious and protective of my husband. He's barking at anything that moves in our backward, not just squirrels, to the point that his throat sounds sore. (We try to divert him, but it seems that nothing short of penning him in -- which we try not to do -- will get him to stop.) We think he's feeling Darren's pain and grief. All Fabian wants to do at night is crawl on one of our laps for the evening until it's bedtime.

What has your experience been with this? How can we help Fabian reduce his anxiety? (We prefer not to use CBD or Adaptil...)
