Holy Moley. Ok, German shepards, labs are down at the bottom - this may be an older count. But any could be used as a potential mating dog? Sell to puppy mill - or if it is so friendly to approach a stranger, could have pet potential (stolen pet potential) - it is free.
I am on a "thing" all about the new information on the COYOTE population in the Town I have lived in for less than a year...HUGE population. I recall seeing a couple in a little municipal airport, called them about the loose dogs, and was told: those are coyotes.
About a year ago.
Not much to think about until 630pm december 19th - and I am walking my small leashed pet - who just stopped - froze - would not move. Looked at her to be sure she wasnt ill - and then the HOWL across the street from my right shoulder. Hiding somewhat by a shrub near apartment building.
Just.watching.me.and.pet.
Was this the "with child" female calling mate or pack to help with me - larger prey - to get to a nice snack: my pet?
I had no idea. My legs turned to rubber. NW INDIANA COYOTES? what??!!!??
It was warm, I threw on flip flops/jeans/hoodie and set out to take Tulip for a potty break. Not really dressed for a confrontation at all: HEAVY BOOTS to kick with?
After the howl - I slowly picked Tulip up, stuck her in my hoodie and walked backward to the closest home. Kept looking back a bit to see if there was another behind me? Knocked on door and the woman gave us a ride home across the street a bit.
They picked up the scent yards away. We were downwind, I suppose. ***Still learning.
I heard the yipping - but thought it was kids down the block having fun on break? NO. This was the den/pack/whatever.
Five minutes later, I get howled at.
The trails behind my home are very overgrown and lots of places to hide to sleep and to attack. We are far from rural - most new developments are now 14 years old. Although there is something going on with some commuter train that they are digging up green spaces all over.
Coyotes jump 6ft fences with pets in mouth. Or take to a shrub and rip it apart.
They tend to sleep during where ever they decide. Sometimes napping in the daytime in a backyard. Or, just walking down the street...
Please - be aware. They DO approach humans in the day time. Attacks ARE on the rise. Many DO have distemper, rabies, mange, etc.
