My vet recommends that anal glands not be expressed unless absolutely necessary and it should be done by a health care professional. If done incorrectly the glands are easily damaged causing ongoing issues. With that said, I have always followed this advice and have never ever had issues with any dog ever.

Sometimes the glands have to be surgically removed.
