It's definitely overkill for just putting in a microchip. I believe that Bella's chip was put in at the time she was spayed and under anesthesia, but supposedly putting in a microchip is just like giving a regular injection. No anesthesia needed. Perhaps a little benadryl ahead of time for just in case.
