There's no vet ER in Mass.?
I can't help out with gagging and heavy breathing, none of my babies ever went through something like that.
Is it possible he found something on the floor and ate it, now gagging to get it up, he could be choking on something with the heavy breathing.
I would get him to a vet ER NOW, not drive back to NJ to your vet, if he's choking on something he could be dead by time you get back to Jersey.
