These days with so many risks, it's important to weigh risk vs reward. What caused the tragic trip was a broken driveway, so one lesson might be to focus on those kinds of hazards. Our pup really benefitted from being in a front pack when she was tiny. The reward was great.


I am considering a sling, too. There are times where I just need to be able to pick her up and let her be comfortable without a lot of fuss. I will be making sure whatever I get doesn't prevent me from watching where I am stepping!
