I honestly think that with time, maybe your confidence will continue to grow, making it a bit easier each time you have to interact with neighbors or whoever.

My only thought/hope for you is that you *don't* shut down more - that instead, you let yourself trust a few people and allow yourself to continue to open up like you are here - I think it's great / positive.
Mm I mean I try to be more open and friendly... but it doesn't help that I live in jersey pretty close to nyc. No offense to other jersey-ans but the people over here are mostly crummy, selfish/self-centered, rude, obnoxious, and you can see it mostly when you're driving to places because it's not just 1 that cuts you off and gives you the finger for no reason... it's kind of frequent... or that time me and my mom almost died on the way home last month because some stupid POS truck driver(the 18 wheelers or whatever) purposely sped up and tried to cut us off a merging lane when we were already going the speed limit and he went so fast he could had killed us. We got off lucky by loosing a mirror. I couldn't grab his license plate because the pos sped up. We honked the horn and he didn't pull to the side. We couldn't do anything about it as it was rainy and it was night.

Maybe it's just me being over glazing it a bit but everytime we go out and on the road we have to deal with poor drivers, and people texting and driving.... I've been friends with people who text and drive and they say they can do it great and that if you can't text and drive properly that you're a "retard"-- at that point I stopped being friends with them. Honestly, I have not had much good experiences here. I've been fine in other places like in georgia, and such... where people are much nicer, laid back, etc.

Anywho, other than this, I am hoping that moving into this more rural area we can gain and keep more peace and quiet.

I assume it might not be all of NJ that's bad and it's more of the suburban and city areas.
