AKC is the only reputable registry in the US so if you don't buy from a breeder using them then you are not getting a puppy from a reputable and it could very well be a mix. Just getting a pet or not you should only buy from reputable breeds and not keep bad ones in business. If you can't meet the breeder and see where the pups are being raised you are very much dealing with a bad breeder and possibly a puppy mill.
