What about using a flat tray or plate and put just a 1/4 handful of kibble on it? That way you'll know if he's eating any of it, plus less of a mess if he flips his food. Have you been able to take Thumper out, say, to Wal-Mart where all the activity might distract him---even a little break from his hurting would be a relief for him (AND YOU!! Are you taking care of yourself, my dear one?)
