Welcome to YT, just a "tip" when ever I get a new med from my vet, I always ask "how long before I will see some improvement".
1-Finish the med the vet gave you.
2-Try to keep him calm during this time to avoid the gasping for air breathing.
3-when med is finished if he still has this cough THEN take him back to your vet.
