We had been putting Max who is 13 weeks old in the bathroom with his bed, toys, lunch and a pee pad. I'm not crazy about that as a backup(he won't be kennels either) but when I'm gone better than mopping the floor. I put a gate up instead of shutting the door so he doesn't feel confined. But we are knocking on wood. I think he gets it. I'm home during the day and he goes to the door so I let him out. If we are gone he uses the backup which is the pee pads. I'm taking a bath tonight and when no one was there to let him out he came upstairs and used the pee pad in the bathroom. Hoping this keeps up!
