I use advantage II for small dogs also. But 'knock on wood' we have never had fleas. We recently applied it because we have been pretty darn social lately. We also treat for heartworm, it didn't used to be in our area but there are a lot of people importing infected dogs from other parts of the country and it is spreading up here. My local vets office had two cases come in last month- I didn't think it was here a few years ago either. These spot on applications are all neurotoxin insecticides, that is how they kill fleas. There are some alternative options to keep parasite populations down and they are best used in a very preventative, holistic, conjunctive and consistent manner.
