The Biewer first originated in 1983 with an accidental breeding between two Yorkies. Since all Yorkies have a tri -color gene, this litter produced a freak of nature, in short puppies that had 3 colors, white, black and gold. The owners decided because of the beautiful look and rarity of the litter, and of the advice of their vet, to try to reproduce a litter like this again, and inbred brother and sister from the same litter. In short, they reproduced the same, puppies of three color markings. Because of inbreeding there were a lot of health issues in the very beginning. Today, because the breeders in Germany have managed to produce several different lines, there has been very few health issues, and overall Biewers are much healthier now a days then Yorkies, in my opinion. Biewers are only supposed to be bred to Biewers! Only in rare instances is a Yorkie allowed in the breeding program. For instance if you have a litter that is getting way to light in color, or the puppies do not resemble the look of a Yorkie anymore, this is when you are allowed to use a male Yorkie to a Biewer female. In no other way should we use a Yorkie on a regular basis, as this will distort the Yorkshire Terrier and Biewer race all together.
