Adding to LJ's post above:
ER vets: check out the emergency vets in your area now so that when you need one, you won't be as concerned. I was afraid of them because I prefer to go to vets I know well.
From all the stories I had read, I had the impression that the ER takes your dog and your credit card into the back room and they don't let you have any say over anything. It's not like that.
Max ended up having an emergency and I didn't hesitate to go to the ER. Turned out to be a really good experience and now I'm over my fear. It was just like our regular vet where I got to stay with Max in the exam room and talk to the doctor.
I also wanted to clarify my post above when I mentioned that a confused look can be a sign of pain -- that is the way Max is, but it doesn't include "drunk" walking or hugging walls. Those symptoms are more worrisome and definitely worth follow up.
