Fear and pain are the two biggest reasons dogs bite. If you evoked either of those, it would certainly explain why he tried to bite. I would not recommend that as a deterrent for this dog in the future. Maybe it works on some dogs, but it does not appear to work for this guy.

Mario used to try very very hard to bite me when I trimmed his nails. I worked very hard at desensitizing him for weeks. Now he is fine with me trimming his nails. He was just afraid, so I worked that out with him through patience and treats, and now no more problem.

I would recommend trying to figure out first why your little guy does not want pjs put on (fear, painful joints, etc...). Then either not put them on, or find a way to desensitize him to the process.
