Our puppy slept in a crate for the first few weeks we had him and then when he was house trained better he got to sleep in our bed. His crate was right next to our bed and he did not fuss because he could hear us and we could talk to him if he did wake up and seemed scared. It worked fine for us. He also slept through the night all but about 3 nights in the first several months we had him so not having to get up was nice! He sleeps through the night now, but we have a pee pad in our bedroom and he can get up and use it and come back to bed if he needs, which he does about 1-2 nights a month.

Try having the puppy in the same room as you so he doesn't feel so lonely and see if that works.
