Oh my does this sound familiar. My 10 week old climbed out of his xpen. Scared the crap out of me. So once they do it they will continue. I bought a canvas pop out "tent we call it" with a zipper top. Got it online for about 39 bucks. It's actually made for dogs. It has been a life saver for him & me. It's big enough to walk around in. I put his crate in it. Now @ 11 months old he goes in it by himself. Every time I get ready to leave the house I fill his Kong & he runs right in it, zip the door and there we have it!
I didn't want to crate either, so this "tent" works great for us.
