I can relate to being in this terrible position! All I can recommend is to be friendly. When you return the dog to the home, say "I was so fearful he would be hit by a car!"
Maybe work in some suggestions for containment like, "I know from my dog how hard it is to contain these little guys. I use a baby gate to block the door." Or if it is a fencing issue, suggest a fix that way.
Does he have tags? If not, gently suggest that too.
