I love the idea of a gold ex pen around the base of the tree. We put up a tree a few years ago and Uni was always going up underneath and hanging out. I didn't have anything to keep her from going under there.
As for the tinsel, I like the kind that is separate as far as how it looks, but it gets really messy. I don't care for the old style tinsel that comes in a big fat strand. We used to do that when we were kids in the 80s. I like the wide twisted ribbon look, more of a Victorian Christmas. But like what Ann said, it's your tree, do whatever you want!
