I am very glad your babies are safe, that is a terrifying experience. Raccoons do not typically come out during the day- recently we had an ill raccoon come up toward our children in the middle of the day. We ushered them inside but he was gone before I got my gun. I work at a feed and animal supply store on the crossroads of town and the country and in town the raccoons are very aggressive and come out during unusual hours. I had a woman come in who took her yorkies outside to go potty and was attacked while holding her brand new (human) baby- the raccoon literally climbed up her leg. We have a lot of people who want to trap and rehome and they do but if they called fish and wildlife, it is not legal in our area. We have a large, dangerous over population of raccoons and not only is it unfortunate that the town folk drive up the hill and drop them off behind other people's back yards (where they kill their chickens) but it is very risky for them and then when the raccoon is taken from its own territory it is more likely to suffer than to thrive due to challenges with competitions and food sources. I had a lovely papillon for ten years who was attacked by a raccoon, she had puncture wounds and required a clip and clean and a round of antibiotics- I am grateful it was not worse. Raccoons do not belong under our houses or in our back yards. Your priority is to keep your babies safe, I'm so glad your girls are alright.
