Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) Sometimes called “spastic colon,” IBS is a functional disorder of the colon that does not involve inflammation. IBS results in chronic painful spasms in the colon that produce cramping, bloating, diarrhea and constipation—symptoms similar to IBD.
