When I observed Jezebel with her litter, it was easy to see that her personality was totally different than her two sisters and one brother. She was the only one that came over to greet us. The other two girls would play but she was the one that would initiate it. The male sat by himself and didn't want to play with his sisters at all.
She is still VERY social and never meets a stranger, be it human or dog. She loves to play and run and is afraid of nothing. When another dog isn't nice, she does not escalate but she does not give up trying to convince them to be friends, either. She is a great little hunter, and very much a terrier. But she is very independent and does not like to be in laps at all. When she is ready to sleep, she will come and lay up against me though. She is very interactive and tries to communicate and lets us know anytime she wants something. If she doesn't get her way, she lets out a quick growl / bark and stomps her front feet. Lets just say I understand how the correct term for a female dog (bitch) became a verb (bitching) and adjective (bitchy) when used to describe some humans or their actions!
There is a lot that I don't know about Chuy because I got him as a rehome when he had just turned a year old. I don't know when he was neutered, but he does not hike his leg. I know that he spent a lot of time alone (50- 60 hours per week) in a laundry room. I know that he was trained not to lick mouths (previous owners told me), but he will lick my nose or chin. They also showed me he was trained to wait inside the door and not run out when his mistress came home from work. When I brought him home, the poor boy would not cross a threshold and go outside, and was actually quite uncomfortable when I put him down in the grass. What is that strange stuff that smushes down and isn't solid when I step on it? Five years later, he is still uncertain of grass, and always has at least one leg off the ground. When he walks in the grass it's like dogs that walk funny when they wear shoes. He does not have Jezebel's confidence, and looks to her for reassurance when something happens that is out of the ordinary. For instance, if there is thunder, he looks at her and sees that she doesn't care and he soon settles down. But he is the sweetest boy, and he loves being in laps. If he sees a lap, he thinks that is where he is supposed to be, even if it is the lap of a stranger. However, when he wants to sleep, he doesn't want anyone touching him. I know some of his behavior was due to training by his previous family and probably being alone so much and lack of being able to explore the outside world affected him as well, but I have no idea what his temperament started out like and if he was confident as a puppy or not.
They are very different from one another but their personalities are complimentary. Chuy is clingy, wants laps, and jealous if Jezebel gets attention. But she is independent and doesn't want too much of it anyway and couldn't care less if he is in my lap. She wants to snuggle when she sleeps and he doesn't. Ying and yang, and they are very bonded.
