I use both the brush and comb. Little bit of this, little bit of that.

Use brushes that do not have balls on the tips of the pins. The ball tips damage hair.
For tighter or bigger tangles, I use a comb first to pick the hair apart carefully. Combs with closely spaced teeth are also the only way to catch tiny tangles.
I always work in sections, starting at the bottom of the hair shaft. If that brushes through, then I move upward, lengthening the stroke. Don't start at the topline and just pull the brush down, not until you are sure the hair is tangle free.
I finish with a comb to make sure that the coat is truly tangle free.
The only breakage that my boys have had is from the tether in their car seat. Max and Teddy go a little wild in the car and the tether rubs against their backs.
