It seems like it's been open season on minorities since...forever. It's terrible when a police officer is killed for just doing their job. I have a family member who's the first female sheriff of her town and would be devastated if something happened to her. With that being said....
There are some hateful, racist, disgusting sorry excuses for human beings who think just because they carry a badge and are "trained" (some very poorly I might add) to use a weapon in circumstances where they feel "threatened" they should shoot first and figure out what's REALLY going on later.
I'm Afro Caribbean my husband is Cuban our son is mixed. I'm on pins and needles for when my son is older and will be labeled a threat by law enforcement agencies just based on the color of his skin. They'll shoot my child for reaching for his insurance info if he gets pulled over for something as simple as not using his turn signal, but allow a white male to walk down a busy street carrying a visable weapon with just a few questions asked and let the white male carry on while my kid will be in a morgue.
I'm law abiding, but gawd forbid I get pulled over for some perceived infraction from the police. I do not want to end up like Freddy Gray or Sandra Bland.
I would be paranoid and fearful ESPECIALLY if I had my child with me. Individuals are always stating that if you're not doing anything wrong you have no reason to not trust the police/law enforcement. Usually this comes from those who've never had discrimination hit close to home and I'll be damned if I allow someone badge or not hurt my child while I'm still living and so help me if I'm dead I'll come back from the grave and find a way to get whoever was stupid enough to touch him.
We're not asking for special treatment, We're asking that law enforcement have better training, use fatal shots as a last resort, and treat our lives as if they matter.
