There are risks, brain function related as this article emphasizes, but the risks can be minimized with a good anesthesia protocol and pre-op exams.

My 92 year old grandmother had surgery to remove her ruptured gallbladder and was never the same again. Either something was wrong with the anesthesia, or her body simply couldn't handle it. Not having surgery would have resulted in death from infection in a short period of time.
