I had to feed Max mostly by hand his first year. He wanted to perform tricks for each piece of kibble. I sped things up by also using a Kong toy that I put a bunch of kibble in at one time.
He started eating on his own when we brought home his brother, who wanted to get into his food.
Now they are both chow hounds.
