Yes,exactly. Make a list of physical attributes within the standard that you absolutely have to have. Do your breeding pairs have to have a perfect earset, topline, bite, personality, etc? Or can you live with a modified coat, longer muzzle, incorrect color, etc if the breeding specimen is exemplary in other aspects?
Choose what you have to have from each dog/bitch. Then if your bitch has a longer muzzle theyn you'd like find a male who has a shorter muzzle and so on and so on.
Usually you can't get a really good idea until 7-9 months on how they'll turn out imo. That's why some breeders hold some puppies back then later place them if they didn't turn out well.
